Our involvement in Farmers Markets
We have been involved with Farmers Markets in Kent since early 2000 and running Farmers Markets since June 2000 when we set up Rochester Farmers Market. At the time we wanted to visit a Farmers Market in Kent and they were few and far between in 2000 so we decided to run a small Farmers Market as part of the launch of the Medway Local Agenda 21 Plan.
This one off event proved so popular that within 2 months a trial of 6 monthly Farmers Markets in Rochester took place. The Farmers Market grew from strength to strength and it was agreed this could continue on a regular basis.
There was a short break in the running of Rochester Farmers Market in 2001 due to the foot and mouth outbreak which impacted on Kent. We continued to run Rochester Farmers Market until 31 March 2004.
In response to producer requests we set up Meopham Farmers Market which opened in July 2004 and has continued to run on the 1st Sunday of each month.
Background to Farmers Markets
Since 1997 when the first Farmers Market open in Bath, Farmers Markets have popped up all over the Country.
At a Farmers Market local producers (mainly from a 30 mile radius, but wider if the product can not be sourced locally) sell their produce that they have grown, raised or produced themselves.
You will find a wide seasonal selection of local produce often characteristic to the area, for example local to Kent are Kentish Cobnuts or Medlers.
